XumaK, LLC, leader in providing comprehensive services and consulting in digital marketing and e-commerce solutions globally, announces the launching of the initiative Café con Causa, which seeks to be an inter-sectoral support platform that revolves around the distribution of coffee cultivated and harvested by indigenous hands in communities of Huehuetenango. The profits will be donated 100% to the population, through educational projects in favor of girls, boys and young people from rural areas of the country.
Café con Causa is a non-profit initiative. Its model is self-sustaining, after covering production and distribution costs, the profits will be used entirely to finance educational projects.
It should stand out that the goal of XumaK today, is to lead by example and open the doors for other people and organizations to make it their own and become partners-ambassadors of this cause. From this action, we can exemplify that, if an organization purchases coffee, it has the possibility to label its logo with the brand Café con Causa on the packaging, as a sign of its commitment and contribution to the development of children and the transformation of society.
"XumaK's name comes my native language Mayan-Q'anjob'al from a term, which translates into Spanish as flourishing. That is why we have adopted it as a philosophy that each project of community service and the promotion of education, beyond our business development, creates a new seed that we hope to see flourish, to continue reaching new goals”, said Marcos Antil, founder and CEO of XumaK, company in which he has promoted social responsibility through various contributions.
Transparency is one of the main values ??of this initiative; this is why the cafeconcausa.org website, officially launched today, publishes its costs, sales and profits generated by the commercialization of coffee, and how we invest these profits in educational projects. Updating this information periodically to show accountability to the benefactors and to the beneficiary communities.
First Project
One of Cafe con Causa’s first projects was to support the strengthening of access to middle and high school education for young people in the village of Cocolá Grande, in the municipality of Santa Eulalia, Huehuetenango; a community of about 600 inhabitants, located about 500 kilometers (about 18 hours) from the Capital City.
The decision to start with this project is because XumaK already has the ground base of support for it. Since 2015, the company began working with the Cocolá Grande Parents' Committee, for the authorization of a National Institute of Basic Education (INEB), before the Ministry of Education (Mineduc).
The coordinated work and the synergy that arose between the community, Mineduc and XumaK, allowed the authorization of the operation of the INEB as of 2016. One of the commitments assumed as a company at that time, was to pay the salaries of teachers. That year, 50 students of the three grades of the basic cycle were enrolled.
"The Mineduc is honored to have XumaK and the community of Cocolá Grande as strategic allies. It is a clear sign that it is possible to unify efforts between the public and private sectors and the population; to bring public education to remote communities in the country, "said Héctor Alejandro Canto, Technical vice Minister of Education.
"Until 2016, almost none of the young people of Cocolá Grande who left sixth grade could continue studying, since the closest middle school was in another village in the municipality of Barillas, three hours away on foot or one hour by car. Today that opportunity has been provided, we want to go for more and not only in this community but in many more,” said Antil.
Today, one of the challenges at Cocolá Grande is to strengthen the INEB and explore the possibility of opening up access to high school education in the community. So that young people are not left with middle school level education, but also have the opportunity to study in a university, and compete in the labor market or launch their own entrepreneurship. This project will benefit nine neighboring communities.
Our goal is that Café con Causa becomes a tool to bring education and/ or strengthen it through access to technology, training and skills development for girls, boys and young people from rural communities in Guatemala.
We appreciate the support and contribution of the people, organizations and media that have already begun to join this cause. You can find some of them on our website www.cafeconcausa.org.
